110 Highlights & Traditions...

Diamond Ohio
  • The Marching 110 marches into their "Diamond Ohio" formation every time that they perform pregame. The "Diamond Ohio" formation began under director Gene Thraikill in the late 1967 for the purpose of giving the band its own trademark.

  • The Marching 110 made their first national appearances in 1968 at a Cincinnati Bengals game and at the Tangerine Bowl which is now the Florida Citrus Bowl.

  • Also in 1968, the Marching 110 began to play the band's first dance chart Ain't Been Good. This John Higgins arrangement is still played at every postgame performance along with the following Marching 110 classics: Light Up by Styx, Cheer by Pot Liquor, and the crowd favorite Long Train Runnin' by The Doobie Brothers.

Live from the Ohio Theatre!
  • Each year, the Marching 110 performs their
annual Varsity Show in Athens, as well as the annual Ohio Theatre Show in Columbus, Ohio. The Varsity Show tradition began in 1968. The 110 also began the annual tradition of performing at the Ohio Theatre while under
the direction of Mr. Ronald P. Socciarelli in 1974. To the right is a picture of the Marching 110 at the Ohio Theatre under the direction of current director Richard Suk.

  • While under Socciarelli, the Marching 110 traveled to Carnegie Hall in New York on October 28, 1976, and became the first marching band ever to perform in Carnegie Hall.

  • In 1993, while under the direction of Mr. Sylvester Young, the Marching 110 traveled to
Washington D.C. to play in the Inaugural Parade for Bill Clinton. The 110 then also played a concert for the presidential inaugural ball.

  • In October 1996, while under the direction of current director Mr. Richard Suk, the Marching 110 opened for First Lady Hillary Clinton's speech at Baker Center in Athens.

  • In September 1998, the Marching 110 performed the opening ceremonies for the LPGA Solheim Cup on the 18th fairway at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

  • In October 1998, the Marching 110 had the honor of performing at the Playhouse Square Light the Lights opening of the restored Allen Theatre. The show featured The Alice Farley Dancers, several of Cleveland's corporate leaders, Ohio Governor George Voinovich and his wife Janet, Broadway director, choreographer and dancer Tommy Tune, the Manhatten Kings, the Cleveland Opera, the Cleveland San Jose Ballet, Ohio Ballet, DanceCleveland, the Great Lakes Theater Festival and Dancing Wheels, Mike Burstyn the star of "Jolson," and finally the Ohio University Marching 110.
